Rawshan Ara Begum, wife of Md. Mojibur Rahman, lives in South
Moamari village of
Dewangonj
upazilla under Jamalpur district. She is enlisted in the hard core poor
families and attends the monthly advocacy session regularly. She has a five
members' family. Her husband is a day laborer and often remains unemployed. So
his family sometime spends their days fasting.
When their eldest daughter Marzina Khatun attained the age
of marriage, Rawshan Ara Begum decided to arrange her wedding without paying
any dowry. She made the decision by realizing the dreadful effects of
dowry-system through the advocacy sessions she attended.
In the meantime, a proposal of marriage for their eldest
daughter was initiated with Md. Jalil Mia, son of Abdul Halim Mia, from
Kawaneechar village, under Dewangonj upazilla. Though the date of wedding was
fixed after discussion among the two sides, suddenly three days before the
wedding day, two persons approached Mojibur Rahman saying that no marriage can
take place without dowry. As a result, Mazina's wedding could not take place
and she became depressed.
The villagers insulted Abdul Halim Mia for his attitude
towards Mojibur and his family. After a few days, Abdul Halim Mia suddenly came
to Mojibur and apologized for his deeds and said that, due to his realization
about the awful effects of dowry-system and knowing the existing legal
positions against it, he has decided that he will not accept any dowry in his
son's wedding. Finally, Jalil wed Marzina on July 18, 2005 without taking any dowry. They are thankful
to SDF and its partner organizations - Dhaka Ahsania Mission.
