Some of our learning
from CIW
Village Development Committee has potentials for alternate
leadership at the village level.
Hardcore poor, women and disadvantaged groups of the community
are capable of playing leadership role in community development.
The Villagers are capable of identifying their problems and
also implementation of community sub-projects.
The village people though poor, come forward for cash
contribution for community sub-projects, provided they have been
appropriately motivated.
Majority of the 12,000 NGOs of our country work on
micro-credit distribution but they find a huge number of
hardcore poor not eligible for micro credit.
When the people become aware, they come forward for
establishing their rights.
Learning from Rural
piped water supply
Demand for pipe water supply is
reasonably high in the rural areas. This is partly because of
arsenic contamination of large number of shallow tube wells in
the country;
The Community has
conceived benefit of running water in kitchen and toilets for
household activities including safe drinking water;
The Community is
used to pay electricity charge from Tk. 100-200 in general;
During consultative process, the villagers indicated to pay
similar charge for piped water supply per month as water tariff.
The Community is
also agreeable to bear the upfront contribution for pipe
connection fee from the water main (Taka 500-1500).
Community agreed to
execute an agreement with Sponsor for upfront contribution and
payment of monthly tariff;
Monthly tariff
setting demands cross subsidy arrangement to include vulnerable
